Vía Láctea, a new opera in English with music by Rebecca Oswald and libretto by Ellen Waterston, enjoyed a spectacular premiere weekend (June 10, 11, and 12, 2016) at the historic Tower Theatre in Bend, Oregon. Staged by OperaBend, directed by Nancy Engebretson, and conducted by maestro Michael Gesme of the Central Oregon Symphony, all three performances at Bend's historic Tower Theatre were sold out, and the audiences' feedback was overwhelmingly positive. Here is one reviewer's response.
Hopefully Vía Láctea will have many performances in other cities and venues in the future! Click here for more information.
My chamber work Theseus and the Minotaur (horn, oboe, percussion, and piano) was awarded Honorable Mention for The American Prize in Composition (chamber music, professional division). I'm also a finalist in the in choral music category for selected works, and am awaiting news from the final adjudication round. I submitted four choral works but have not yet been informed which ones advanced to finalist stage.
In 2014 I was a finalist in The American Prize in Composition in two categories. Three of my choral works (Pied Beauty and Reciprocity, both SATB a cappella, and Wise Words of Love for SSAA/piano) attained finalist status in choral music, professional division. Two of my chamber works (Field Report: News from Rural Oregon for clarinet and piano, and Aesop's Fables for woodwind quintet and narrator) attained finalist status in chamber music, professional division. In 2014 I had also progressed to the semi-finals in the orchestral music category (professional division).
